The Coolest Stuff: Real Industrial Edge Furniture... April 22 2014, 0 Comments

Sometimes you'll run across something while browsing the internet and you'll think, "that's pretty neat". Occasionally you'll run across something while browsing the internet and you'll think, "that's really neat". Rarely - very, very rarely - you'll run across something while browsing the internet and you'll think, "THAT MIGHT BE THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN".

At some point in the middle of 2013, I was mindlessly looking at stuff on Instagram, not really paying attention to anything I was seeing, and I came upon Real Industrial Edge Furniture. I immediately had one of those rare "THAT MIGHT BE THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN" moments, and ended up spending multiple hours browsing through a seemingly endless product catalog of some seriously awesome creations.

The man behind these creations was (and still is) Justin Real. I reached out to him to let him know how much I admired his work, and he emailed me back in less than five minutes to say "thanks". We've been working together ever since.

Whether it be an amazing side table, a glass-topped i-beam coffee table, a sinfully-wonderful rolling media cabinet, a custom reclaimed wood top bar, an ash top industrial desk, or a rolling industrial entertainment stand, Justin just flat-out comes up with the coolest stuff you'll ever see.

He was kind enough to lend me a couple minutes last week, and I asked him a few questions in order to illustrate what goes into his process.

Five Questions with Justin Real (Real Industrial Edge Furniture, LLC)

1. How long have you been creating furniture, and how did you get started?
Ten years. I got started by just being sick of junk furniture, so I built a few stools for fun one day and it took off from there. I've always built things, and have always had an interest in motorcycles, cars, and architecture. To me they've always all seem connected in some strange way.

2. Of all your creations, which one is your personal favorite?
My personal favorite piece so far was a giant reception desk that I made for Crunch Gym in Sydney, Australia. (note: here is the link to that reception desk - it's amazing)

3. What's the biggest challenge you face on a daily basis?
My biggest challenge is focusing on one thing at a time. I have a very full plate, but I also have so many things that I want to build or improve upon - but there's only so much time in a day. Also, the ripoff artists who steal my designs and then do them poorly. (note: there are a TON of them that I've personally come across, and I won't do them the favor of mentioning them by name)

4. What inspires you to create?
My main inspirations come from architecture, and the mechanics of motorcycles. I love to see all the different parts that make things work.

5. How can people get in touch with you?
A few outlets...

Thanks to Justin for taking time out of his day to answer my questions.
